about

Mellow instrumental album of Pacific Rim Psychedelia

The Challenge of instrumental noodeling is to noodle, yet move your listener too. Air's 'Moon Safari' famously succeded, but Britain's own Skyray now show the same uncanny capasity. They have a respectable pedigree, since Paul Simpson was and original member of The Teardrop Explodes, partner of Ian Broudie in Care and singer with Zoo label legends Wild Swans - though the only vocal here is by ex-Zoo label boss Bill Drummond. Their producer is Henry Priestman, himself a hitmaker as a member and main songwriter for The Christians. Mind Lagoons is swooning, peaceful stuff, replete with images of balmy tropical waters and dreamy aquatic encounters: Simpson is credited with 'harpoon bass and vapour trail guitars', while Priestman plays 'forbidden glissando, soft water piano and fine coral Moog'. Thus their metaphors are wet but their wit is dry. And the music really rather beautiful.
